Egmont Key Coastal Dune Restoration May 2003
|
|
More than 50 volunteers planted native sea oats and railroad vines at Egmont Key State Park on May 31, 2003. The project will help stabilize sand dunes protecting historic gun batteries on the island, and enhance wildlife habitat.
The volunteers traveled to Egmont Key on a local tour boat and spent the morning planting more than 7,000 plants. After watering in the plants, the volunteers broke for lunch in the shade of the gun batteries, where they were joined by several curious gopher tortoises who inhabit the island.
Following lunch, some of the volunteers took a guided tour of the island, while others cooled off with a swim in the turquoise waters surrounding Egmont Key.
Thanks, volunteers, for another terrific effort on behalf of Tampa Bay!
