The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has begun offering gift certificates that allow anyone to purchase a specialty license plate as a gift for a motor vehicle registrant.

This new gift certificate works much like any gift certificate. Upon payment of the annual use fee, a gift certificate may be purchased at an authorized motor vehicle office (state motor vehicle office, local tax collector office, or licensed tag agent) for any of the more than 100 specialty license tags currently available in Florida – including the “Tampa Bay Estuary” tag that features a tarpon chasing baitfish.

At the time of purchase, a receipt will be provided and a credit issued in the name of the gift recipient, which can then be redeemed by the recipient at the time the specialty license plate is purchased. You do not have to purchase and redeem the certificate at the same office.

The Tampa Bay Estuary license tag costs $27 the first year and $17 per year after that, with $15 going directly to bay improvement projects.

Proceeds from sales of the plate fund community grants to schools, homeowners associations and non-profit organizations for bay education and restoration projects. More than $700,000 has been allocated to community grants since the license tag first became available in 1999.
