ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

“Wounded Paradise: Florida’s Past or Florida’s Future

This film is a co-production of WUSF-TV and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) and explores different ways to reduce the negative impacts Florida’s rapid development and population growth have on rivers, lakes and bays. Experts explain on one hand how the population growth has created a booming economy, while others detail how population growth has resulted in the degradation of Florida’s complex ecosystems. “Motor”

A documentary exploring the conflicts posed by use of motorized vehicles in national forests and on other public lands. Produced by High Plains Films and The Ecology Center. Running Time: 38 minutes

“Subdivide and Conquer: A Modern Western”

This high-quality, documentary for PBS examines the social, political and environmental problems associated with urban sprawl, from the perspective of the AmericanWest. This film was named Best Environmental Program at the Telluride Film Festival. Running Time: 60 minutes

“Environmental Explorations: Weedon Island” and “Environmental Explorations: Air Quality”

These videos were produced by Pinellas County Government Access TV. The Weedon Island video explores the rich cultural and natural history of Weedon Island Preserve, while the Air Quality video examines the sources and effects of air pollution, and what the county is doing to monitor and reduce pollution. “It’s In Your Hands”

Learn how FWC’s marine fisheries research and management help protect and conserve Florida’s fish and wildlife in this film featuring award-winning television producer Mark Sosin of Mark Sosin’s Saltwater Journal. “Maintaining Florida’s Fisheries”

Learn all about Florida’s saltwater projects funded by FWC’s Sport Fish Restoration program in this video hosted by FWC and Saltwater Journal’s Mark Sosin. The research projects help boost boating and fishing opportunities around the state and are part of a national effort to provide resource managers with vital information for developing fish and wildlife management plans. INVASIVE SPECIES

“Wild Florida – Invasive Exotics” (New!)

Hosted by television personality and Florida native Hunter Reno, this public television series explores our state’s unique ecosystem and the animals that inhabit it. This segment focuses on the environmental and economic threat posed by non-native, invasive plants and animals like the python and the iguana. “Reclaiming Paradise: Eradicating Exotic Invasive Species”

Learn how a group of determined condominium residents in Pinellas County worked together to remove invasive Brazilian pepper trees from their common area in this video that aired locally on public access television. ** This project was funded with a TBEP Bay Mini-Grant! Running Time: 20 minutes

“Stop Exotics, Clean Your Boat”

Featuring John Ratzenberger (Cliff from the TV show “Cheers”) this video shows simple steps all boaters can take to help prevent the spread of invasive plants and animals, such as zebra mussels, hydrilla and water hyacinths, that can be both ecologically and economically devastating. Running Time: 11 minutes

“Plants Out of Place”

This 15-minute video summary of a national television documentary examines the environmental and economic toll taken by invasive plant species imported to the United States either intentionally or unwittingly. Part of the Techno 2001 series produced by Information Television Network, this documentary was partially funded by the Gulf of Mexico Program. Running Time: 60 minutes

“Aquatic Invaders”

This film explores the economic and environmental threats posed by invasive species, such as the zebra mussel, and how scientists, the public and policy makers are working to prevent the spread of these harmful interlopers. Although the subject matter emphasizes the Great Lakes region, it is applicable to all areas of the nation. Produced by Information Television Network in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other organizations. Running Time: 30 minutes

“Non-Native Invasion”

Join Greg Grandy and the Environmental Toolbox student reporters as they investigate what environmental impacts invasive species have on various ecosystems in North America, and the measures one can take to control them. Produced by Louisiana Public Broadcasting. Running Time: 19:49 minutes

LAND PRESERVATION

“This Land Is Your Land”

Produced by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), this film features a group of explorers as they visit District-owned lands and discover how these lands protect the water resource. What you can do to protect manatees and the habitats they depend upon. Produced by Save The Manatee Club.

“A Closer Look at Manatees”

Examines the biology of the manatee, including growth, reproduction, seasonal movements, and critical habitats. Ideal for classroom use. Produced by Diane Wilkins Productions with a grant from the state’s Advisory Council on Environmental Education. Running Time: 10 minutes

“The State of Manatees”

Explores factors affecting the survival of manatees, provides an overview of current research, and describes measures being taken by the state to protect manatees. This video also offers valuable tips on boating safely near manatees. Produced by Diane Wilkins Productions with a grant from the state’s Advisory Council on Environmental Education.

PROJECTS FOR THE CLASSROOM

“Coastal Wetland Nursery”

This video produced by Chamberlain High School students offers instructions for designing, building and maintaining a salt marsh nursery as a school project. The High School Wetland Nursery Program is conducted by Tampa BayWatch. Running Time: 12 minutes

STORMWATER RUNOFF

“After The Rain”

This film explores the importance of water, the pressures our growing cities are placing on this precious resource, and ways that individuals can protect local drinking water supplies and waterways. Produced by Oregon State University Extension Service. Running Time: 30 minutes

SEAGRASS

“Seagrass: A Tropical Rainforest In Our Bay” and “Seagrass Monitoring: BayWatch for the Real Florida”

The first video is a short primer on seagrasses – what they are and why they’re so crucial to the health of Florida estuaries. The second video, provides an overview of a seagrass monitoring program that uses trained volunteers. Both videos were produced by the St. Andrew Bay Resource Management Association. TAMPA BAY

“Tampa Bay: Living Legacy”

This one-hour documentary film chronicles Tampa Bay’s transformation from a relatively unspoiled paradise in the 1950s, to a waterway battered by pollution in the 1970s, to its amazing rebirth and recovery beginning some 25 years ago and continuing today. “Tampa Bay: Living Legacy” features interviews with scientists, elected officials and citizens, including well-known Floridians such as former Governor of Florida Bob Martinez, the Mayors of both Tampa and St. Petersburg, and former State Education Commissioner Betty Castor. Compelling archival images help tell the bay’s story, along with extensive new footage showcasing the extraordinary beauty of the bay’s habitats and inhabitants. Produced by Public Media Productions for the Tampa Bay Estuary Program; additional funding provided by the Pinellas County Environmental Fund. Running Time: 57 minutes

“Bringing Back the Bay”

Produced by the Southwest Florida Water Management District, this video looks at the history and recovery of the Bay, as well as the creation of the Surface Water Improvement and Management Program (SWIM) to coordinate habitat restoration in the bay watershed. “Wings over the Wetlands”

This video illustrates the importance of the Barataria and Terrebonne Basins–precious wetland habitats that serve as “stop-over” habitats for millions of migrating birds each year.
