Sure, the waste produced by one dog may not seem like a big deal, but multiply that by the estimated 500,000 dogs that live in the Tampa Bay watershed and it can really add up to a pile of problems for our rivers, streams and bays.
The Tampa Bay Estuary Program is launching a pet waste education campaign to increase awareness of the public health and water quality impacts of dog poop. Our motto: “Clean Waters. Clean Yards. And Clean Shoes!”
We’ll be conducting a pilot education project in the coming year in a community park and greenway along the Hillsborough River in Tampa, and working with local animal shelters, pet stores and others to spread the word about the need to pick up after our pets.
